UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School

Be Curious. Be Humble. Be Purposeful. Be Kind. Be Agile. Be True.

The Undergraduate Business Program (UBP) at UNC Kenan-Flagler is consistently ranked among the Top 10 programs in the U.S. and has educated future business leaders for more than a century. We foster a truly collaborative, participatory, and team-based learning culture. Beyond their mastery of business essentials, our students are regularly praised by employers for having engaging personalities, great attitudes, and excellent team skills.

At any given time, the UBP is educating approximately 1,000 undergraduate students from a diverse set of backgrounds with an even more diverse set of interests. We aim to provide students with a transformational experience through curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular programs that help them achieve their post-baccalaureate goals, have a positive impact on their communities, and do business the Carolina Way.

Our Origin Story: The Dream of Two Seniors

The Carolina Case Challenge was founded in the Spring of 2019 by Jess Schmitz and Phillippa Owens, who were seniors in UNC Kenan-Flagler’s Undergraduate Business Program (UBP) at the time. After representing UNC in “the varsity sport of business school” by participating in multiple case competitions each, both domestically and abroad, Jess and Phillippa were eager to pay it forward and provide other students with similar great experiences. They came to UBP staff member, Amy Bugno, with a wild request in December of 2018 – an international, intercollegiate case competition with big name corporate sponsors… before graduation.

Despite potential obstacles and a serious time crunch, Amy urged the UBP leadership to take the leap with her and support these two enthusiastic and reliable student leaders. The innovation of these student leaders and success of that first year is honored by the continuation of this program.
